Graduate research training programs include:

Ph.D. in Physical Therapy – supported by an NIH training grant, this interdisciplinary training program has faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy; Mechanical Engineering; and Health and Exercise Sciences.

Ph.D. in Biomechanics & Movement Sciences – Programs of study focus on topics in the areas of biomechanics, motor control, applied physiology, exercise physiology, motor behavior and applied anatomy. This is an interdisciplinary program that is home to faculty from the College of Health Sciences, College of Engineering and the College of Arts & Sciences. The 5 areas of study are Applied Anatomy & Biomechanics; Applied/Exercise Physiology; Motor Control & Behavior; Rehabilitation Engineering; and Tissue/Molecular Biomechanics.


Ph.D in biomechanics and movement sciences Graduate Research Education

Ph.D. in Medical Sciences – a graduate interdisciplinary program with faculty from the College of Health Sciences (Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Behavioral Health and Nutrition, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology) – Programs of study focus on topics in the areas of pathogenesis of disease, biomarkers that can aid in diagnosis and treatment, evidence-based practice, and the underlying mechanisms of chronic illness.

Ph.D. in Nursing Science – area of study are associated with the School of Nursing’s three research foci: (1) health promotion & risk reduction across the lifespan, (2) management of chronic conditions, and (3) health systems management, policy & education.

Ph.D in Applied Physiology Graduate Research Education

Ph.D. in Applied Physiology – Affiliated with the Biomechanics and Movement Sciences training program, the programmatic emphasis is on the regulation, adaptation, and integration of mechanisms across all levels of biological organization from molecules to organ systems. New knowledge on health, aging, chronic disease, and injury prevention will be generated and disseminated. Along with in-depth, laboratory-based immersion, the mission of the proposed program is to provide high quality classroom-based instruction through a core graduate curriculum, electives, and seminars.


M.S. in Exercise Physiology – Also affiliated with the Biomechanics and Movement Science training program. The graduate program in Exercise Science offers a Master of Science degree with a major in Exercise Science and concentrations in biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor control, sports medicine, and clinical exercise physiology.

M.S. in Human Nutrition – This program emphasizes advanced knowledge of core nutrition principles and prepares students for advanced practice, research, and leadership roles. Potential areas of specialization include nutrition science, nutrition education, and community nutrition.

M.S in Health Promotion – This program prepares leaders in the diverse health promotion fields who can translate science for the comprehensive promotion of health and prevention of disease among individuals and population across the lifespan

MS in Health Promotion Graduate Research Education

M.S. Bridge to the doctorate program – An NSF funded program that rotates each year through participating institutions in the greater Philadelphia, Southern New Jersey, Delaware region. This promotes the participation of underrepresented minority students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program will be centered at the University of Delaware in 2014.

Certificate in Health Coaching – The Graduate Certificate in Health Coaching provides students and professionals working in health care with the knowledge and skills to facilitate positive behavior change to promote health and reduce chronic disease risk and experience.
