One in 40 children falls within the spectrum of disorders known as autism. These children struggle, to varying degrees, with motor and communication skills. Recognizing a dearth of research evidence related to motor interventions in children with autism, Dr. Anjana Bhat, of UD’s Department of Physical Therapy, has been working to develop creative and engaging therapies to help this population. In her latest project, Bhat has worked with Lynette Overby, UD professor of theatre and dance, and her students, to develop an eight-week dance and creative movement protocol aimed at promoting social communication, cognition and motor skills in children with autism.
